It will be located on the site of the former Lisheen Mine

Tipperary TD Jackie Cahill has welcomed very positive news for Lisheen, with confirmation that planning permission has been granted for a new BioProducts Campus at the Lisheen mine site. This positive news for the locality will see the creation of at least 30 on-site jobs and will contribute to reducing Ireland’s carbon emissions.

Speaking on this today, the Thurles man said: “The proposed BioProducts Campus on the former Lisheen mine site in Tipperary will create at least 30 on-site jobs and reduce Ireland’s carbon emissions by 0.3%. When completed, the facility will generate sufficient biomethane or renewable electricity to power 33,000 homes. At a time in our country where we need to be investing in sustainable, reliable and home-grown electricity sources, this is a prime example of what the Lisheen site and new, environmentally conscious industries have to offer our locality.

The Government TD ( pictured above) continued to state: “I strongly believe in a just-transition for rural Ireland, that sees climate friendly policies and practices being adopted that are both economically and environmentally sustainable. With this move, we are proving the important role that rural Ireland and the agricultural industry must and will play as we fight climate change, while also enjoying the positive spin-offs of local, rural employment.

“As Chair of the Oireachtas Agriculture Committee, I have been determined that policy is being focused on what rural Ireland can do to combat climate change, instead of telling us what we can’t do. Today, we are proving what we can do.

Deputy Cahill is also working on other projects locally, aimed at bringing investment and employment opportunities back into the Lisheen site. In stating that he sees today’s news as the first of a number of positive announcements, the local Fianna Fáil TD said: “I am confident that this is only the first of many such circular economy and eco-friendly industries that will enter Lisheen over the coming years. It is a very positive day for the Lisheen site, as we see industry re-entering the area, bringing with it local jobs and employment for the betterment of our local economy”, Deputy Cahill concluded.
