Renewed call in Tipperary to use modular housing to tackle homelessness

Councillor David Dunne has called on the council to push for modular units instead of B&Bs for the homeless.
He said at last week’s Tipperary County Council budget meeting that B&B accommodation is “costing us a fortune”.
Cllr Dunne said plastic units would only cost around €80,000 to deliver.
“It would pay for itself. The aim of the budget is to save money so you can use it somewhere else,” said Cllr Dunne.
During the presentation from planning, Cllr Dunne also asked that the council give a six-month temporary permission for existing modular homes.
“It’s crazy that we would make a man homeless over it. We are taking people to court over one, and then there's another left standing on the same road,” said Cllr Dunne.
A planning official at Tipperary County Council said that they must follow the legislation on modular homes.
However, he said there has been some indication that something may change soon.
He said they are “adopting a wait and see approach.”
