Templemore ICA adopted the green patch in the Town Square in 1987 to commemorate their 25th anniversary and it was duly transformed into an attractive garden under the expertise of local man Jimmy Doran.
The existing weeping Ash tree had previously been planted to mark Ireland's entry into the European Union in 1972 with a corresponding one on the Eastern end of the town.
Unfortunately both trees are now suffering from the Ash die-back disease and may not survive for too long more.
ICA members maintained the garden over the years and in more recent times the Tidy Towns committee have continued this work.
This committee now operates under the umbrella of the Templemore Development Association who in turn are in on-going contact with the County Council Officers in the Municipal District.
The garden's recent facelift was funded by the Council as was repair work on the small bed at the Mall Bridge on Church Avenue, kerbing repairs etc. opposite the Abbey entrance and the reseeding of the Wildflower bed on the Dunkerrin road.
The committee are most grateful for the Council's assistance in carrying out this work and particularly to Sharon Scully for her continuing interest and cooperation with the Development Association.
