Thurles Golf Club Junior Cup team hit top form to qualify for the Areas final
The Thurles Golf Club Junior Cup team defeated Tipperary in Co. Tipperary Golf Club on Saturday last. They qualified for the Area Finals which will take place in West Waterford on 10th and 11th August.
The Barton Shield is an unusual format where two pairs play their opponents in match play and the cumulative score counts.
The 3rd round of the Barton Shield brought Thurles Golf Club to Fota Island, a venue which hosted the Irish Open on a number of occasions.
Their team consisted of Gavin Smyth, Paul Byrne, Aaron Ryan and Mark Ruddy (with Jon Corbett reserve) played exceptionally well to beat Mitchelstown in the morning session. Next up was Clonmel. This was a tight affair for much of the game but the Thurles lads prevailed and produced a good win to make to the last 4, Thurles, Cahir, Bandon and Lee Valley.
Thurles were drawn against our neighbours, Cahir Park, a team they are familiar with having played in Barton Shield two years ago. This contest ebbed and flowed and while Thurles were ahead after 9, Cahir gained momentum and in a really tight game, the lead slipped leaving Cahir winners on the day by 2 holes. Having set themselves high targets, the lads were disappointed but they all played really well and they can be proud of their performance.

There will be 9 Hole Singles (Men and Ladies) every evening from 5.30pm.
