The unsightly back garden waste is causing a vermin problem around the three properties

A Carrick-on-Suir councillor has highlighted to Tipperary County Council how constituents have come to him concerned about three separate homes where household rubbish has built up at the rear of the properties causing a vermin problem and eyesore.

Cllr Kieran Bourke raised the three cases with council officials at Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District’s latest monthly meeting.

He asked what measures the council could take to deal with them and asked the council to check whether they are disposing of their household refuse properly.

He told the meeting that in the previous six weeks, he received three different complaints from people whose neighbours’ back gardens were covered in household refuse.

“There is vermin running around and causing problems to their neighbours.

“One of these is a local authority resident and the two others are in private residential properties.”

Cllr Bourke pointed out when residents raised the waste problem with a private landlord, they were “told where to go”.

Michael Moroney of Tipperary County Council’s Environment & Climate Action Section responded that the council could survey the houses requesting the tenants to produce evidence in the form of receipts to show that they were using a refuse collection service or bringing their waste to a civic amenity site.

He confirmed that if it was established these households weren’t properly disposing of waste, the council has the power to prosecute them.

Mr Moroney said he could forward the cases highlighted by Cllr Bourke to the council’s enforcement team.
