Tipperary councillor's call to extend footpath between town's two sports clubs rejected

Tipperary County Council has no plans to build a footpath linking Newport GAA Club and Newport FC soccer club, Cllr Fiona Bonfield was informed at the November meeting on Nenagh Municipal District Council.
Cllr Bonfield had called for the facility to be installed on the basis that it was an ideal Active Travel project and because of the number of children who walk the road to the soccer grounds.
She also pointed out that there were plans for an extension to the GAA grounds.
Cllr Bonfield’s call was supported by Cllr Hughie McGrath.
However, District Administrator Rosemary Joyce, said that it was not Council policy to install footpaths outside of town speed limits and that such a project would require land purchase.
She said it may become possible at a later date using the local road and not the regional road beside the GAA grounds and an application could be made then.
Cllr Bonfield said she could understand where Ms Joyce was coming from when it came to using the local road, but pointed out that local landowners were in favour of the scheme.
