Voters in Tipperary have also recorded a massive 'No' vote in the Care Amendment Referendum ballot.

The 40th Amendment Referendum received a total of 41,500 (77.4%) “No” votes and 12,083 (22.5%) “Yes” votes in Tipperary.

A total of 54,273 people out of an Electorate of 122,159 voted in the referendum in the Premier County. Turnout was 44.4%. There were 690 invalid ballot papers, which gave a Total Valid Poll of 53,583.

Independent Tipperary Cllr Máirín McGrath welcomed the “No” result in the Care Referendum in Tipperary.

She said the Government had been saying that these referendums would further support the family but when you dug down into the wording, that wasn't the case, she argued.

Cllr McGrath claimed the proposed wording in the Care Referendum was much weaker than the existing wording in the Constitution. She argued the amendment as proposed was a “get out of jail” provision for the Government as it would have removed the obligation on the State to provide care to families and people with disabilities.
