The little girl was diagnosed with a rare condition

The family of a little girl has thanked those who helped her after she was diagnosed with a rare condition.

Three-year-old Peggy Leahy will have to undergo chemotherapy and a bone narrow transplant, and a local community is rallying together to help fund the treatment.

To help her, a GAA club in Tipperary has rallied to help the very proud Boherlahan girl after she was diagnosed with a rare immunodeficiency.

“We would like to say thank you to everyone who has donated so far. It will help Peggy and the four of us massively as we travel to Newcastle and settle there for a little while.

It’s been a really hectic few weeks as Peggy has been in Crumlin. The outpouring of support and well wishes has blown us away,” the family explained.

“We cannot believe the support from you all, our family, friends, club and community. So many people have said they are behind Peggy and that we are not alone. It has been incredible.”

The little girl suffers from a genetic condition which leaves her vulnerable to specific types of bacteria called non tuberculosis mycobacterium.

Most people are able to fight off these bacteria, but unfortunately, Peggy is left exposed to them due to her condition.

The Boherlahan Dualla GAA, as well as Juvenile, Camogie and LGFA wanted to support the little girl and her family. To do so, they have organised ‘Pedal for Peggy’, an indoor cycling event, as well as a fundraiser. The proceeds of the fundraiser will help the family move to Newcastle, where Peggy will be able to get treatment for her condition.

“Like all Boherlahan women, Peggy is tough and when the doctor recently asked where she was from her reply was 'Well I’m from Boherlahan, but I’m really a Tubberadora Lady'. She loves Boherlahan as much as her Daddy and she can’t wait to get a pink helmet and to train with all her friends,” they explained.

The 24-hour indoor cycle event, 'Pedal for Peggy’, took place from Friday, March 29 at 5pm until Saturday, March 30 at 5pm in the Boherlahan Dualla GAA Grounds.
