Senator Ahearn pays tribute to Leo Varadkar

Senator Garret Ahearn has given his support to Simon Harris for the leadership role within Fine Gael following the shock announcement by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar earlier this week that he would be retiring from the role.

Senator Garret Ahearn said “I was very shocked to learn that the Taoiseach had decided to retire from his position. He has had an exemplary career in politics. He was instrumental in implementing marriage equality and the repealing of the 8th amendment. Both of which were monumental days for Ireland reflecting how we have changed as a country.

Senator Garret Ahearn continued “The role of party leader and Taoiseach is obviously extremely important, and we need to ensure we have the right person for the position. I have known Simon Harris for many years now. I have seen him campaign and work tirelessly for his constituents. He is extremely capable.

“While he would be the youngest Taoiseach in the history of the state, I believe that Simon has what it takes. He has a “get it done” attitude and on a professional level has always done whatever he could to help in his various Ministerial roles.

“A week in politics is a long time, a lot has changed this week, but change is quite often a good thing, Simon will bring fresh ideas and perspectives to the role and I am very happy to support him attaining the position” Senator Garret Ahearn concluded
