Tipperary midwife to be remembered in national exhibition on International Women's Day

Silvermines' Bridget Rohan Tompkins will be the subject of a talk by Margaret Kennedy
A Tipperary woman is to be remembered as part of a major national project led by the National Museum of Ireland.
Bridget Rohan Tompkins, from Silvermines, will be the subject of a talk by Margaret Kennedy to mark International Women’s Day.
Ms Rohan Tompkins was a community nurse who worked across Tipperary with the republican movement during years of conflict in the 1920s.
The talk will take place on International Women’s Day, March 8 at the National Museum in Turlough Park, Co Mayo.
The discussion forms part of a wider project on community nurses and midwives during the 19th and 20th centuries, with more stories from Tipperary sought for the exhibition.
Lorna Elms, iCAN Development Officer with the National Museum says that they would encourage more stories of community nurses and midwives from Tipperary.
“We’d like to hear from more people in Co Tipperary and across Ireland to further expand on this community-led historical research into midwifery,” she said.
“Community midwives provided a vital network of healthcare provision for women in rural Ireland - sustaining the lives of mothers and babies during birth – often in very challenging conditions,” Ms Elms added.
