'Visitors must climb over a stone wall to access national monument,' says Tipperary councillor

Cllr Declan Burgess is calling on the Minister to enhance visitor access and information at Athassel Abbey, near Golden.
Cllr Declan Burgess has written to Minister Kevin "Boxer" Moran, calling for urgent action to enhance visitor access and information at Athassel Abbey, near Golden, Co. Tipperary.
Athassel Abbey, Ireland’s largest priory and a site of significant historical importance, is currently under the care of the OPW.
However, Cllr Burgess has highlighted serious concerns from visitors and local residents regarding unsafe and inadequate access to the monument.
“It is not acceptable that visitors are expected to climb over a stone wall to access a national monument,” said Cllr Burgess. “This is not only unsafe but unwelcoming to those wishing to explore one of Ireland’s most stunning and under-appreciated heritage sites.”
In his communication to Minister Moran, Cllr Burgess has requested the installation of a kissing gate to improve access and ensure proper accessibility.
He has also called for the erection of an information board at the entrance, noting that Athassel Abbey is currently without basic visitor signage, which is standard at other OPW-managed sites.
“This is a unique and beautiful location steeped in history, yet it's being underutilised and neglected when it comes to visitor experience,” he added.
“Enhancing the site with clear, informative signage and safe access is a small investment that would have a big impact.”
Cllr Burgess confirmed he has been in contact with the local landowner, who is supportive and willing to engage with the OPW to facilitate these improvements.
“Preserving and promoting our national heritage must be a core priority.” Cllr Burgess concluded.
He now awaits a response from Minister Moran and the OPW and remains hopeful that action will be taken to enhance and protect this national treasure. Cllr Burgess also made calls at today’s Municipal District meeting, asking the local authority to write to the OPW supporting his requests.
