Carrick Davins GAA Club club and the town of Carrick-on-Suir have received yet another blow with the passing of our good friend Liam O'Dwyer.

Liam was the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Davins Club in 2022. He was an exceptional clubman and gave his all with juveniles.

He coached GAA in many schools around the county and the Davins benefited greatly from his coaching skills, winning South and county titles at U12, with the majority of those players continuing onto adult level.

Liam gave decades of his time to the club, up to and including 2021. Liam was the Davins Club's Juvenile chairman and academy coach.

He also had a love for politics and music. In May 1974 Liam was elected as an Independent councillor for Carrick-on-Suir and didn’t vacate that seat until May, 2004.

Most of the country saw Liam perform on stage. He toured with the Clancy bothers on their farewell tour of Ireland with his own band.

He was passionate about his music, and last year released his album Heartfelt made with his good friend Stephen Travers. Liam donated some of the proceeds from the album to Dementia Ireland. He played with Stephen for eight years in two bands, The Movies and The Sinners.

This project was especially important to Liam. He had suffered a bad stroke in 2011 and his rehabilitation was timely and hard.  Liam credits Stephen Travers as a reason why he got back into music after his stroke. Stephen contacted him to record a song he had written about peace in Northern Ireland, called “The Calling”, and after some persuasion he agreed to do it.

Liam also made an appearance on the worldwide critically acclaimed Netflix documentary “The Miami Showband massacre”.

Speaking about Liam, Stephen Travers once said, “I was taken to Daisy Hill Hospital on the morning of July 3, 1975 and, by the end of the day, Liam O'Dwyer, who didn’t drive at the time, had made his way from Carrick-on-Suir in South Tipperary to Newry. That’s a “Friend”.

Liam will be deeply missed by his sons William, Ian and Mark, his brother Paddy, sisters Joan, Helen, Pauline, Marian, Ermen and Monica and his grandchildren Liam and Tadgh.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Meanwhile, the Davins Club lotto returns on January 10 after the Christmas break.

The club congratulates Lee and Siobhan; Shane and Helena on their recent nuptials and wishes both couples a lifetime of happiness.
