Clonmel's new first citizen sets out her priorities for the year ahead

More garda resources are needed, insists Cllr Siobhan Ambrose, following her election as Mayor of Clonmel
Securing additional garda resources for Clonmel is one of the priorities for the year ahead for the newly elected Mayor of Clonmel, Cllr Siobhan Ambrose.
Fianna Fail’s Cllr Ambrose, who held the position of first citizen of Clonmel on two previous occasions, was elected after being proposed by Cllr John Fitzgerald and seconded by Cllr Richie Molloy.
There were no other nominations for the position.
Fine Gael’s Cllr John Fitzgerald was elected Deputy Mayor.
Elected representatives and officials congratulated both Cllr Ambrose and Cllr Fitzgerald and wished them well for the year ahead.
Cllr Ambrose told the annual meeting at the Town Hall that she was honoured to be elected Mayor of Clonmel for Clonmel Borough District.
“I am hugely ambitious for the Clonmel area and, in particular, for the future vision, potential, and growth that I see for our county town. One only has to look at the suite of multi-million euro projects that are both in the pipeline and others currently under construction,” Cllr Ambrose told the meeting.
Cllr Ambrose said funding under the URDF was very important for Clonme. She said proposed works in O’Connell Street involving new public lights, footpaths, and road re-surfacing, and Upper Gladstone Street, where the restoration of the former chemist unit, Parkes, and upgrade to the surrounding streetscape were positive for the town.
Cllr Ambrose was happy that progress was being made on a number of projects, such as the provision of the new library in Clonmel, the first phase of CCTV for Clonmel, the new €60million Garda Station, and Kickham Barracks.
“ Fianna Fáil Minister James Lawless has committed to visiting this site after the summer, once the official site transfer has been finalised, to announce the next phase of the final section of this site. Once this multimillion-euro announcement is made, it will mean that design works can commence to facilitate both the ETB Adult Education courses and the relocation of TUS (college) on the inner relief road to this section of the site. When construction works are completed, it will mean that there will be up to 1,000 students accessing this site on a weekly basis,” she said.
The outgoing Mayor of Clonmel Cllr Pat English said he was glad that significant progress was made on the new Garda Station, new library, €20 million allocated for the outer relief roads and the CCTV system for the town.
