The walk is one of a series of events for Generational Renewal Week 2026.

A farm walk will be held on the lands of Mike and Birdy Slattery in Nenagh as part of Generational Renewal Week 2026, to look at a collaborative arrangement where no family successor was identified for the farm.

The walk takes place on September 9, where people will have the opportunity to see how two young farmers, Shane and Kieran Kennedy, have “forged a successful dairy farming career through the use of collaborative options”.

Beginning at 12pm and lasting two hours, the walk takes place at Barbaha, Nenagh, E45 K599.

The walk is one of a series of events for Generational Renewal Week 2026.

Other events include an online webinar on Monday September 7, with real-life examples from drystock farmers John and Joe Atkinson, as well as dairy farmers Lar and Lauren Kinsella. They will share their tales of generational renewal in action, promising an “honest and practical look at generational renewal” to show what succession planning can look like in practice.

Another webinar will be held on September 8 at 8pm, where the Fair Deal scheme will be explained by Ultan Hayes of the HSE.

Mr Hayes will explain how the Fair Deal scheme works, and the implications for farm families as well as other considerations when planning for the future.

Another webinar takes place on September 10 at 8pm, where Klara McGriskin will talk attendees through agricultural tax reliefs, and other collaborative farming options for farmers in Ireland.

GENERATIONAL RENEWAL WEEK 2026

Generational Renewal Week will highlight career paths for young farmers and support for older farmers in stepping back.

It also covers tax, succession, and collaborative models like partnerships, share farming, and leasing to help families to start the transition.

Teagasc’s Guide to Transferring the Family Farm is available online.

Key to successful succession planning is the essential need to talk and invovle the entire family while there is still time, and for parents to avoid assuming what their children want.
