Councillor presses for funding to upgrade forest roadways near Slievenamon Mass Rock

Fine Gael Cllr Mark Fitzgerald issued the appeal at Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District’s monthly meeting
A Cloneen councillor's call to seek funding to invest in forest roadways for walkers near the Mass Rock at Kylatea on a north-eastern foothill of Slievenamon, received a positive reception from council management at Carrick Municipal District's monthly meeting.
Cllr Mark Fitzgerald requested the council consider submitting a funding application next year for such a project.
He said Mass was still celebrated at the Mass Rock and the local community accessed it via Coillte tracks.
It was a popular area for walkers as you can do a 5km and 10km loop walk, he added.
Cllr Fitzgerald noted there was very limited space for parking near the rock. He understood Coillte planned to fell trees in that area and suggested when the trees are cut, the council work with Coillte in relation to laying a hardcore surface on a section so people could park there.
“It would be very beneficial to people on both sides of the mountain. It's only 20 minutes from Carrick and most parts of the district,” he added.
District Administrator Marie Cox said the project would be most suitable for Outdoor Recreation & Infrastructure Scheme Funding.
She committed to working with District Engineer Michael Scully to submit a funding application next year and promised to come back to Cllr Fitzgerald on the matter.
