Application seeks change of use for Railway Road unit with gym and Pilates studio plans

Former 2016 All-Ireland winning captain and three-time senior All-Ireland winner Brendan Maher has applied for planning permission for a new gym and wellness facility in Thurles.

Mr Maher, through his company BMA Performance Ltd, has lodged an application with Tipperary County Council to change the use of an existing industrial unit on Railway Road into a gym and wellness centre.

The building was previously used by Dinan Timber Products, according to documents submitted with the application.

Planning documents confirm that Robert Stakelum of AP Dinan Ltd, the owner of the property at Railway Road, Thurles, has granted consent for Mr Maher to apply for planning permission for the development.

The proposed development includes an open gym area and a Pilates studio within the existing building. Plans also include associated car parking and site access, with provision for 17 parking spaces.

Following his retirement from inter-county hurling in 2021, Mr Maher has worked in the fitness industry. He runs fitness classes in Leap Fitness in Borrisoleigh, and is also involved in The Pilates Programme, a physiotherapy-led online Pilates platform which is run by his wife, Aoife Hannon.

The application was received by the council on May 1. Submissions can be made up to June 4, and a decision is due by June 25.
