New changes to the Clare and Tipperary Garda Division are due to come into effect from this Sunday, August 27, local council representatives have been told in a letter from Chief Supt Colm O’Sullivan, which has been seen by the Tipperary Star.

The letter states that An Garda Síochána is currently undergoing a major change programme. As part of this programme, the Garda Divisions of Clare and Tipperary are being amalgamated into one Garda Division, under one chief superintendent, with the Divisional Office based at Ennis Garda Station.

Further changes across Division are also occurring, through the merger of Districts into Community Engagement Functional Areas and the establishment of a Crime Functional Area, which will be based in Nenagh.

This Sunday will see the completion of the phased implementation of An Garda Síochána’s Operating Model, a key element of the transformation programme A Policing Service For our Future, Chief Supt O’Sullivan states.

The Operating Model is restructuring Divisions to put community policing at the centre of the Division.

Each Division will comprise of four Functional Areas: Community Engagement, Crime, Performance Assurance and Business Services.

“The Clare/Tipperary Division has already commenced implementation of the Business Services and Performance Assurance Functional Areas, which has reduced the amount of administrative activities held by operational members.

Continuing on from this, and as An Garda Síochána: Ag Coinneáil Daoine Sábháilte – Keeping People Safe, we will introduce the remaining Functional Areas of Community Engagement and Crime on Sunday, August 27. Each Functional Area is led by a superintendent, with the exception of the Business Services Functional Area which is led by an assistant principal,” he says.

Under the Operating Model, all garda stations and former Districts have been aligned to a Community Engagement Functional Area covering the following areas:
