The Nenagh movie debut that played a role in Cillian Murphy winning a Golden Globe

Irish actor Cillian Murphy is the movie man of the moment following his Golden Globe win for his role in Oppenheimer.

But few will know that the talented Cork actor had what was probably one of his first movie roles in a short film shot by award winning director Tom Waller on the shores of Lough Derg back in 1999 when Murphy.

Eviction, written and directed by Waller whose family have a house on the lakeshore at Ryanskahaeen, is set in 19th century Ireland when the Molly Maguires take revenge on an old man who has been telling tales to the landlord.

The then 23-year-old Murphy played the part of Brendan McBride, the son of the house from where his family were being evicted by landlord Rupert Vansittart, best known for his role as Lord Ashfordly in the ITV drama Heartbeat and for playing Lord Yohn Royce in the HBO series Game of Thrones.

Former Carrig National School principal Liam Maloney, who played the part of a constable in the 12-minute movie, recalled Murphy as a “shy young man full of enthusiasm to do the job well”.

He said that Murphy always wanted to listen to what Tom Waller had to say.

Waller's movie Cave, re-released in 2022 as Cave Rescue, dealt with the real life Thai cave rescue of the members of a young football team trapped underground.

Mr Maloney recalled that Tom had gathered up a few friends to make Evicted.

“We are all feeling a touch of fame at the moment,” he joked. “Hopefully we helped Cillian on his road.”

Other professional actors in the movie included Maria Lennon, Denys Hawthorne and Dermot Martin.

The bulk of the cast was made up of locals, including Jack Bayly, Jeremy Cairns, James Hanly, Ann Flannery, Peter McCutheon and Joseph Hughes.

Others in the cast were Stephen Tierney, Adam Waller, Mac Kelleher, Billy Hogan, Donal Gleeson Jr, Donal Gleeson, Simon Scottt, Aisling Sheehan, Mark Hanna, Mark Lambert and Killian Fitzgerald.
