Challenge matches prohibited by GAA until January 1

Reports have suggested that Tipperary and Offaly have been fined €250 each for playing a recent hurling challenge.

It's understood that the match was played at O'Connor Park in Tullamore.

The GAA has prohibited challenge matches until January 1.

As part of the GAA/GPA contact-hours policy recently agreed, it was stipulated that a minimum of six weeks’ pre-season training would take place before any competitive games would take place.

Challenge matches are considered competitive by the Association.

Tipperary's season begins officially on Tuesday January 3 when they take on Waterford in the Munster League in Dungarvan.

The National Hurling League begins on Saturday February 4 when Tipp entertain Laois at FBD Semple Stadium.
