20 Kildare motorists detected in one day with mobile phone offences

Gardai to step up enforcement and to hold roadside checks for bank holiday weekend

An Garda Síochána Kildare reports that on Monday, July 28 it detected 20 motorists driving while holding a mobile phone.

The #NaasRPU (Naas Roads Policing Unit) reports that three of these drivers were driving articulated lorries.

According to An Garda Síochána Kildare, drivers using a mobile phone are four times more likely to be involved in a collision.

Texting while driving increases crash risk by 23 times, they report.

Mobile phone distraction is the number one cause of driver distraction on Irish roads.

The penalties for holding a mobile phone while driving are: a €120 Fixed Charge Penalty Notice plus three penalty points.

If convicted in court, however, this rises to up to €2,000 fine and five penalty points.

A message from An Garda Síochána Kildare stated: “We are stepping up enforcement and conducting additional roadside checks in the lead-up to, and during, the August Bank Holiday Weekend. Remember: ‘Your Mobile Phone – Would it Kill You to Put it Away'”
