Kildare County Council should  buy a historic disused property close to the main street in Naas.

Market House is located close to the Grand Canal harbour in Naas and was erected by John Bourke, the fourth Lord Mayo, about 1813.

It was according to the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage, regarded as an “important component of the early nineteenth century build heritage of Naas.”

More recently it was the subject of plans to develop a restaurant.

Independent councillor Bill Clear wants KCC to acquire it by way of compulsory purchase ”for the benefit of the community.”

He added: “This landmark and historically significant site has been derelict for 15 years, creating an eyesore and detracting from the appeal of the harbour area.”

He said a compulsory purchase order would facilitate the restoration  of the property,  enhance the local environment, preserve its historical value and allow it to be used for community development purposes.
