Cllr William Durkan (FG) raised the matter at a recent municipal district meeting

A Fine Gael councillor has called on Kildare County Council to provide an estimate for the extension of a footpath to link Derrinturn and Carbury Village.

Cllr William Durkan tabled his motion at the July sitting of Clane Maynooth Municipal District, held on Friday, July 3 2026.

Cllr Durkan motioned: “That the council provides an estimated costing of works for the extension of the current footpath on the R403 to link Derrinturn and Carbury Village, with a view to improve community access to important services in the area.”

A report issued by the council stated there would be “significant costs” associated with land acquisition and accommodation works for the footpath extension, which are dependent on inputs from a land valuer.

As a result, the report continued, “it is not possible to provide an accurate overall cost at this stage.”

The council stated, however, that the proposed footpath route is approximately 1.1 km in length, linking the two locations.

“Based on typical construction rates”, the estimated cost for constructing a footpath of this length “is approximately €700,000, excluding any land acquisition or accommodation costs”, the report concluded.
