Cllr David Trost (FF) called for an inspection of the back lanes in St Patrick's Park, Celbridge

Kildare County Council is to carry out an inspection of a location in Celbridge, Co Kildare following concerns of littering and materials being dumped in the area.

Fianna Fáil councillor, David Trost motioned at the June Celbridge Leixlip Municipal District meeting: “That the council progresses a full review of the back lanes in St Patrick's Park, Celbridge, to include removal of grass/weeds/dumped materials, and the repair of damaged/worn surfaces where necessary.”

Welcoming the fact that the council is to carry out an inspection of the back lanes in St Patrick's Park, Cllr Trost told the council that this is an area which becomes heavily littered and damaged at certain times.

He said he would like assurances that if work were identified to be carried, that this would be done “in a timely manner.”

There had been instances of cars being abandoned in the area, he pointed out, and unfortunately the area was one which was prone to abuse on an ongoing basis.

“Let's hope the survey is done quickly and anything that is recommended is done speedily”, he concluded.

Cllr Nuala Killeen (SD), supporting the motion, said the main issue with the back lanes was the blockage of access to emergency vehicles, and said that access to the area must be addressed.

The ownership of the lanes rests with Kildare County Council, she pointed out.

She asked if perhaps it were the case that the council needed to collect the weeds and grass on a regular basis, or if there was an arrangement with the residents association.

People see the area run-down, she said, which encourages even more dumping into the area.

Also supporting the motion, Cllr Declan Ryan (FG) said he was also approached about the issue.

He agreed with Cllr Killeen that the main problem was the “lower end” at the bank and the back of pubs and restaurants, where some people had recently overturned all the bins and the lane was in poor condition.

A report issued by Kildare County Council stated: “The Municipal District Office will carry out an inspection of the back lanes in St. Patrick’s Park to determine necessary works.”
