Her winning run was brought abruptly to an end at the Breeders’ Cup.

Connections of Blue Bolt are set to decide later this week whether the multiple Group One-winning mare will return next season after failing to fire at the Breeders’ Cup.

Andrew Balding’s four-year-old won her first six starts of the year for owner-breeders Juddmonte, a sequence incorporating Group One wins in the Falmouth Stakes on home soil, the Prix Rothschild in France, the Matron Stakes in Ireland and the Sun Chariot back at Headquarters last month.

She was a hot favourite to successfully step up in trip in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Keeneland on Saturday, but after becoming upset in the starting stalls she failed to fire, eventually passing the post 11th of the 12 runners.

While disappointed to end the campaign on a low note, Juddmonte’s European racing manager Barry Mahon reports Blue Bolt to have emerged relatively unscathed and the team can reflect on fantastic 2026 overall for the daughter of Blue Point.

“She’s all good after the weekend, apart from a couple of cuts and scrapes and scratches on her from messing around in the stalls,” said Mahon.

“It was a disappointing effort, I’d say it was just the long season catching up with her. Colin (Keane) felt she was sluggish from the gate and sluggish the whole way through, so it was probably just one of them lacklustre end of season runs.”

Having recently announced the retirement of another superstar mare in Kalpana, connections must now decide whether Blue Bolt will also be undertaking broodmare duties from next year or whether she will grace the racecourse again.

Mahon added: “She owes us nothing and she’s been a star all year to be fair. We’re delighted that she’s back safe and sound and I think the owners are going to let us know this week what they want to do, whether she’ll stay in training or retire.”
