CCTV systems operated by Kildare County Council for traffic management purposes can’t be used against offending motorists.

At a Naas Municipal District meeting, former councillor Bob Quinn wanted to know if the cameras can monitor the behaviour of motorists.

He also wanted to know if they could be deployed against those who don’t comply with the rules of the road throughout.

KCC engineer Donal Hodgins said there is no legal basis for any local authority to use traffic management CCTV to monitor behaviour of motorists and other road users.

He said for this to happen it would be necessary to enact a section of the  Road Traffic and Roads Act 2023.
