Cllr Daragh Fitzpatrick (FF) raised the issue at a recent Clane-Maynooth MD meeting

A total of €15,000 from LPT funding is to be distributed throughout the Clane-Maynooth municipal district towards Christmas lighting, following a decision made in a recent MD meeting.

The decision follows a motion by Cathaoirleach Cllr Daragh Fitzpatrick (FF), which asked “That the council provides funding under a Christmas Lights Grants Scheme for the current year in this municipal district.”

A report issued by the council stated that “there is currently no funding provision within the council's grant programmes for a dedicated Christmas Lights Grant and, accordingly, no funding is available to establish such a scheme.”

However, the report noted that members had allocated a sum of €15,000 from the Local Property Tax (LPT) fund for Christmas lighting purposes as part of their LPT deliberations.

The report further noted that this figure of €15,000 “has not been distributed among groups or organisations.”

The distribution of this €15,000 LPT funding is a matter for the elected members to decide upon, the report concluded.

A council official told councillors he had compiled a list “of what groups should be getting”, based on previous years' figures.

The allocations are as follows:

  • €3,000 to Kilcock Christmas Lights;
  • €3,000 to Maynooth Christmas Lights;
  • €2,500 to Clane Christmas Lights;
  • €2,500 to Caragh Christmas Lights;
  • €2,000 to Robertstown Christmas Lights;
  • €1,000 to Coill Dubh Christmas Lights;
  • €1,000 to Newtown Christmas Lights.

The distribution of the LPT funding for Christmas lights for the district was agreed by members.
