Housing, infrastructure and funding were some of the issues discussed

Housing, infrastructure and funding were just some of the issues discussed by Mayor of Kildare County Council Tim Durkan and An Tánaiste Simon Harris, in a high level meeting in Government Buildings today (July 8).

The Tánaiste, along with senior Ministers, met with 13 Fine Gael Councillors who have recently been elected as the first citizen of their county.

Councillor Durkan, who was elected as Cathaoirleach in June, outlined his main priorities for his term.

“With more than 7,500 people on the housing list in Kildare, we need to move on housing, schools and creches in tandem. You can’t build houses without civic amenities to go with them.

“I want to make planning permission easier for rural, one-off housing and bring the McAuley Place model of assisted-living to every municipal district in Kildare, which gives people a real option to downsize.

“We also need serious investment in cycling and active travel infrastructure, and more school places.”

Tánaiste Simon Harris said: “I want to thank Tim for meeting me in Government Buildings and for the energy he is bringing to his new role. Fine Gael is at its best when we work as one team, locally and nationally, and Tim will be a strong voice for Kildare at that table along with Fine Gael Councillors in the area.

“Where we can help deliver for the people of Kildare, whether that is housing, infrastructure or investment in the county, my door is open and I will be in regular contact with Tim to see what more we can do for Kildare. National ambition and local delivery have to go hand in hand and that is exactly what today’s meeting was about.”
