Local Fianna Fail Senator and Newbridge resident Fiona O’Loughlin took to the floor of the Senate this morning to call for Sports Campus for Newbridge.
O’Loughlin said, “This morning in the Seanad I called for a Sports Campus for Newbridge. We are a growing town, with growing needs and access to adequate sporting facilities is one need that I believe should be addressed.”
“Yesterday Miley Wickham from Newbridge Volleyball and I met with the Minister for Sport Thomas Byrne to discuss the need for a facility for their club, but there are many other clubs around Newbridge such as Newbridge gliders, Newbridge hockey club and Newbridge athletic club who are facing similar challenges in terms of available space.”
Fiona concluded, “As we approach the next Newbridge Local Area Plan, I believe a multi-use sports campus absolutely should play a central role, and I will continue to work with Cllrs Noel Heavey and Rob Power on the appropriate zoning etc. furthermore while the sports capital grant process gives very supportive funding for capital builds, I have called for the State to provide capital funding for site acquisition and to work with local authorities in relation to same. We are lucky to have wonderful volunteers like Miley whose life’s work has been ensuring that young people have the opportunity to play a wide variety of sports. We need to support their vision in a positive and practical way.”
