It has 350 members but has been using Kildare school facilities for 30 years

A Kildare basketball club is seeking help to find a permanent base.

Naas Serpents fields 17 teams across all age groups with over 40 coaches, showcasing a strong commitment to underage development. Total club membership now exceeds 350 and is 30 years old.

The club says the sport thrives on community passion and grassroots development, but its impressive growth is constrained by the lack of a dedicated indoor facility.

It adds that securing this vital infrastructure through collaborative efforts is essential for the sport’s long-term sustainability and continued expansion.

Its base “is scattered across the town begging and borrowing indoor court facilities from various primary and secondary schools.”

The club says this disrupted model is “not synergistic for the club's development.”

Furthermore capital sports grants invariably favour large sports clubs that own or have a long-term lease on a premises or grounds.

The group made a presentation to Kildare County Council seeking support and this coincided with the release by KCC this month of a sports plan survey which will identify priority needs and increase participation in sport and physical activity in Kildare.
