KILDARE: Strike out in case where man sped in car to aid his assaulted mother

A defendant who appeared in Naas District Court on Thursday, June 15, had his case struck out.
The man was being prosecuted for speeding in County Kildare, and pleaded guilty to the offence.
However, his solicitor, David Powderly, told Judge Desmond Zaidan that he was speeding in order to come to the aid of his mother, who was in an abusive relationship at the time, and had been 'beaten up' by her now ex-partner.
Mr Powderly also showed the judge's photographs of the injuries the woman sustained while she was involved in the relationship.
He added that she has since been granted a protection order against her ex-partner.
Garda Sergeant Brian Jacob said that while the man did commit a speeding offence, he accepted that it was 'an emergency situation.'
Judge Zaidan said he also accepted this, and decided to strike out the case.
