Kildare County Council is told the intention is not to replace the school warden scheme

Kildare County Council is being encouraged to promote the Junior School Warden Scheme, which provides for pupils in senior schools helping young pupils to cross the road safely.

Peter Melrose told a KCC meeting that other road safety education initiatives should be promoted in partnership with the gardaí and the schools.

Cllr Melrose said it was not his intention to replace the school warden scheme, which is operated by adults

KCC said it engages with the gardaí on an ongoing basis in relation to a range of road safety education initiatives and will continue to work collaboratively with them to support and promote road safety awareness.

KCC also said it welcomes opportunities to support schools in delivering road safety education and is agreeable to exploring the feasibility of running a JSWS.

It said issues to be addressed include the appropriate age of potential junior wardens, the training requirements and the scope of responsibilities.

KCC also said it has ongoing engagement with schools and will continue to engage with schools and relevant partners to explore opportunities to promote pedestrian safety, cycling safety and other road safety initiatives.
