New supports announced for carers in Kildare - Heydon

Kildare South TD and Minister Martin Heydon has confirmed a series of supports for carers in Kildare including a new scheme to enhance the pension provision for long-term Carers, following an announcement by Minister Heather Humphreys this morning.
Minister Heydon said, “Today’s measures mark a significant step forward in recognising and supporting the vital role of carers in our society. By enhancing pension provisions and increasing financial support, we are not only acknowledging the dedication of carers but also providing them with tangible assistance.
“A €400 Carer's Support Grant will be provided to 120,000 carers across the country, many of whom are in Kildare, as a support for their hard work.”
“The new Long Term Carers Contributions scheme will make it easier for a long term carer to qualify for a Contributory State Pension. Any period in which a carer is registered as providing care to a person who has a disability that requires full-time care and attention will be included in their pay-related social insurance (PRSI) record for State Pension (Contributory) purposes. To avail of these changes, a minimum of 20 years of Long-Term Carers contributions are required. Carers can now apply for Long-Term Carers contributions at MyWelfare.ie.”
"We are also implementing increases to the weekly earnings disregard for Carer’s Allowance. From June 2024, the income disregard for the scheme will be €450 per week for a single person, an increase of €100, and €900, an increase of €150, for a couple. This is part of our ongoing commitment to enhance the support system for carers, reflecting the second expansion of the Carer’s means test."
“By improving pension entitlements and raising financial allowances, we are taking concrete steps to alleviate some of the challenges faced by carers and ensuring that our carers receive the recognition and support they deserve.” Minister Heydon concluded.
