Open air theatre at National Stud and Castletown
Chapterhouse is delighted to be returning to County Kildare for its 2023 Summer tour. This summer, County Kildare residents will have the opportunity to enjoy three of Chapterhouse’s productions in the beautiful surroundings of The Irish National Stud and Gardens, and Castletown House.
The theatre company will stage The Secret Garden on Friday, July 7, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream on Wednesday, June 21 at the national stud.
Both performances begin at 7pm.
On Saturday, July 1, Chapterhouse will perform The Importance of Being Earnest at 6pm at Castletown House in Celbridge.
Theatre under the open sky is the perfect pastime for those long summer evenings, and audiences are welcome to relax with a picnic while they watch the show unfold.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Chapterhouse Theatre Company presents Shakespeare’s best-loved romantic comedy. Let yourself be whisked away on an enchanting journey to the most magical of forests and meet bewitched lovers, playful fairies, and hilarious travelling players.
Beautifully designed Elizabethan costumes, a wonderful musical score and fine performances come together to make this an evening of unmissable summer garden theatre.
One of Shakespeare’s most famous comedies, A Midsummer Night’s Dream follows three story threads as they are tangled together by fae trickster Puck; four young lovers traverse an enchanted forest on Midsummer’s night, The Faerie King Oberon and Queen Titania feud with one another, and a travelling troupe present a play within a play.
Believed to have been written in 1595 or 1596 to celebrate an aristocratic wedding, ours is a story of order and chaos, waking and dreaming and love and marriage.
The Importance of Being Earnest
Chapterhouse Theatre Company is proud to present Oscar Wilde’s finest and most eccentric romantic comedy, featuring a cast of unforgettable and larger-than-life characters; the delightful Cecily, the roguish Algernon, and the formidable Lady Bracknell are sure to keep you wildly entertained!
Picnic with family and friends and enjoy Wilde’s hilarious tale of double lives and mistaken identities, presented with both wit and style in the beautiful surroundings of Castletown House. The most widely renown of Oscar Wilde’s comedies, The Importance of Being Earnest: A Trivial Comedy for Serious People follows two bachelors, Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, each of whom are attempting to win the hearts of young women who claim only to be capable of loving men named ‘Ernest’.
When both Jack and Algernon assume alter-egos of that name, the lies start to spiral out of control and they struggle to keep their stories straight and their paths uncrossed.
What unfolds is a raucous tale of deception, disguise, and misadventure, all swept towards an explosive conclusion by Wilde’s expert pacing and cutting dialogue.
The Secret Garden
Written by Frances Hodgson Burnett and adapted for the stage by Laura Turner, join young Mary Lennox on her journey of discovery as she travels to her uncle’s house deep in the Yorkshire countryside, where unexpected friends and magical creatures help her unlock the mystery of the secret garden.
This enchanting story, loved by children and adults alike, is presented in the beautiful setting of Irish National Stud and Gardens. Alive with music and song and featuring an array of especially designed creatures, The Secret Garden captures the spirit of summer and promises to be an unforgettable evening of magical theatre in magical surroundings.
