Fine Gael councillor, Paul Brooks has requested a pedestrian crossing for Confey, Leixlip

A Fine Gael councillor has called for the introduction of a pedestrian crossing from Confey GAA to Confey Cemetery, Leixlip, Co Kildare.

Speaking at a recent MD meeting, Cllr Paul Brooks welcomed the fact the council had added it to a list of similar infrastructural requests.

He said he would wish to impress upon the council, however, that this request should be treated “as a priority.”

With Confey GAA training most evenings and over weekends, he said, the route was “quite dangerous.”

His request not just about a pedestrian crossing, he said, but about generally slowing down traffic in the area, which could be quite busy at times.

Cllr Brooks said that with funerals taking place in Confey Cemetery, and with people parking in Confey GAA, the area presented a risk.

It was his wish, he said, to make the area a “safer environment” for people crossing the road.

Speaking in support of the motion, Cllr Nuala Killeen (SD) said the concern was one which had blighted Leixlip for a number of years.

Cllr Killeen pointed to the expansion in residential units in the general vicinity, and explained this was a “very busy stretch” and a very underdeveloped road.

“It's also a rat-run to one of the biggest factories in the county”, she said, in reference to the Leixlip Intel plant.

Cllr Killeen asked that “road safety aspects” be considered when plans are underway to assess for a pedestrian crossing for the area.

Responding to councillors, a council official acknowledged there was a need for a pedestrian crossing at the location, particularly because there is also a bus step on that stretch of road, he said.

As such, an assessment would be carried out in the area, it was confirmed.
