Kidare judge urged them to support each other

A dispute over a broken washing machine inadvertently brought a couple to court.

The man appeared before a family law hearing at Naas District Court having been arrested for breaching a protection order.

Garda Darragh Moloney said the man was initially detained at a Kildare garda station on May 19.

But the garda added that he had no objection to bail provided that the defendant sign on at a named garda station.

The court heard that the couple are originally from Africa and there was an argument over whether a washing machine should be replaced or repaired.

Garda Moloney said the issue escalated into roaring, shouting and name calling and the woman, who appeared for the hearing, was in fear at the time.

Judge Desmond Zaidan adjourned the matter for a fuller hearing to October 16. He told the couple they should support each other.

“You came here to make a better life for yourselves,” the judge added.
