Annual Jamie “Smiley” Donohoe Golf Classic raises €4,000 for Newbridge Autism Friendly Town Committee

The annual Jamie “Smiley” Donohoe Golf Classic has raised €4,000 for the Newbridge Autism Friendly Town Committee, bringing the total amount raised for various charities over the past 19 years to more than €80,000.

The cheque presentation took place recently.

"Jamie's parents, Paul and Maria, and his sisters, Ciara and Hayley, would like to sincerely thank everyone who supported this year's event, as well as those who have supported us throughout the past 19 years. Your continued generosity and support have helped make a real difference to so many worthy causes,” said the organisers.

Planning has already begun for the 20th Annual Golf Classic, which will take place on Saturday, June 5 2027, at Newbridge Golf Club.

"We hope to see many familiar faces there as we celebrate this special milestone. Many thanks again for your continued support,” they added.

The 19th Jamie “Smiley” Donohoe Golf Classic was held on May 30 at Newbridge Golf Club. The event commemorates the memory of Jamie Donohoe who tragically lost his life on 17 March 2007 at the young age of 16. It is organised by Jamie’s family and has always garnered huge support.

Each year, a local charity is chosen as a beneficiary, with this year’s recipient being the Newbridge Autism Friendly Town Committee.

The mission of the committee is to address the hidden barriers that autistic people in Newbridge face, with the goal of making the town a more inclusive and welcoming place for all.

"Working closely with AsIAm, the autism charity, we are embarking on a 3 year project to join the growing list of accredited Autism Friendly Towns in Ireland,” it said.

"To help us achieve this, we are calling on all local businesses, public services and voluntary organisations to sign up for free training to become Autism Friendly Champions. Training can be done in person or online at a time that suits.

"Many organisations tell us that they want to be more inclusive but are not sure where to begin. We have simplified the process and will provide support every step of way. Alongside a network of local business leaders and groups, participants will learn about simple, practical changes that cost nothing but make a real difference to neurodivergent customers and their families.”

Speaking in advance of the event, a spokesperson for Newbridge Autism Friendly Town Committee said “We are very grateful to have the support of the Donohoe family through this year’s Jamie “Smiley” Donohoe Golf Classic, an event that has supported many wonderful causes in our community. All funds raised will be used to support the autistic community in Newbridge, giving everyone the same chance to live, work and play in the town.”
