The move follows a motion by Celbridge-Leixlip Cathaoirleach, Cllr David Trost (FF)

A seven-day traffic survey was carried out on Maynooth Road, Celbridge during week ending Friday, September 18, Kildare County Council has confirmed.

The move followed a request by Cllr David Trost (FF) at a recent Celbridge-Leixlip Municipal District meeting for the council to consider additional traffic calming measures on Maynooth Road, from Tesco junction to Beatty Grove, Celbridge.

According to Cllr Trost's motion, a traffic survey was previously requested for the area, including additional speed ramps or rumble strips to reduce speeding, which was an ongoing problem.

Cllr Trost explained to the council that the traffic problem in the area had been an “ongoing issue” due to roadworks in the vicinity of the location; while traffic was previously moving slowly, he said, traffic flow to a degree had been restored, leading to many motorists exceeding the stated speed limit.

There is “a lot of speeding”, he said, from the traffic lights at Tesco, “right up Maynooth Road and beyond Beatty Grove.”

This has been a regular problem, Cllr Trost said, and he pointed out there had been a number of incidents in the past where people were trying to exit the Maynooth Road into their own housing estates.

“It's something I feel very strongly about”, Cllr Trost said, adding that people living in the area are “very conscious of the problem.”

Supporting Cllr Trost's motion, Cllr Rupert Heather (LAB) said that with so many entrances to local estates coming from the local supermarket, it was “clear” that many drivers were not adhering to set speed limits.

However, he noted, it was certainly a positive point that the council was to carry out a seven-day traffic survey in the area, as set out in the council report.

A report issued by the council stated: “A seven-day traffic survey is to be carried out week ending Friday, 18 September.

“The Municipal District Office is not in a position to deploy survey equipment prior to this date. Data will be available in the following weeks to determine if there is an issue at this location.”
