The Meningitis Research Foundation is asking runners in the Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon to run on its behalf.
A spokesperson said: "With your help, we will be able to to fund our National Awareness Programme and offer support services to families affected.
"Meningitis Research Foundation is the only meningitis charity dedicated to funding research, awareness and support in Ireland for the last 20 years.
"We support families affected by meningitis and septicaemia via our freefone helpline and home visits.
"We also educate the general public and health professionals, providing disease awareness talks and information literature nationwide.
Meningitis and septicaemia – the blood poisoning form of the disease can affect anyone at any age affecting around 200-250 people every year in Ireland, with babies and young children most at risk.
"Sadly, one in ten may die and many others may be left with after effects as severe as brain damage, deafness and amputations."
