Coillte has moved to ban horse riding from the area around Kellyville Lake near Athy.

The man-made lake of approximately 12 acres previously existed on the Webber Estate at Ballintubbert.

The lake is popular with families from the surrounding areas.

However Coillte has erected signs prohibiting horse riding in the area.

Hoof marks, horse dung and animal feed could be seen on the footpath in recent days.

In the 1800s, there were several thousand ducks on the lake.
