An Athy man appeared in court today charged with an alleged knife attack in the town last month.

The alleged stabbing incident happened in Garter Lane, Athy at 1.50pm on September 29.

Ian Lawlor (35) of Clonmullion in Athy, who is charged with assault causing harm, appeared at Naas District Court today.

An earlier court sitting heard that the stabbing victim was taken to Naas General Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery and received 100 surgical stitches.

Insp Mel Smyth today asked Judge Desmond Zaidan for a six-week adjournment for the garda investigation to progress.

The senior gardai said that officers are still awaiting the medical report on the victim which he said was a 'significant factor' in their inquiries.

Judge Zaidan said that after considering the facts of the case, it was only fair to grant the extra time to gardai.

Judge Zaidan adjourned the defendant on continuing bail to Naas District Court on December 22. A previous court hearing heard that Mr Lawlor is a recovering heroin addict but has been clean in recent times. The court was told he has a partner and a young daughter.
