Gary Cully registers another early stoppage to claim WBA Inter-Continental lightweight title

Naas’ Gary Cully defeated Wilfredo Flores on Saturday to claim the WBA Inter-Continental lightweight title in the second round. The quickfire win over the previously undefeated American adds another stunning early knockout to Cully’s record that is quickly making him must-see TV in the boxing world. He now moves his record to a perfect 16-0 with 10 wins coming via stoppage.
Cully has his mind set on a world title fight after another emphatic win. Cully fought with Pete Taylor in his corner and plans to fight next on the undercard of Katie Taylor's blockbuster bout against Amanda Serrano in May.
Cully took control of this fight from the first bell and was stinging Flores with jabs early on. The impact of Cully’s long jab was visible on his opponent’s face as he cut the American over his right eye in round one.
The second round was all one-way traffic as Cully sought to put his opponent out as he sat Flores down with a well-placed left-hand which all but ended this fight. Flores made his way back to his feet but the Kildare man ended the contest just moments later as he completed another stellar performance.
The 27-year-old was brimming with confidence post-fight and after his recent signing with Matchroom he was quick to mention his conversation with promoter Eddie Hearn in his post-fight interview, “I went over to the ropes, and I told Eddie I’m a superstar. I believe that; I always believed that. I believe Matchroom has been massive for my career. I believe that Matchroom and Eddie are the best in the world, and I believe that I’m one of the best lightweights in the world as well, so it’s the perfect platform to be on.”
