U16 B Camogie All-Ireland Championship

Kildare 5-12

Roscommon 0-6

Kildare Under 16 Camogie team backed up their opening round 24 point win over Carlow last Sunday  with a similar performance and result against Roscommon this Sunday to take them to the top of the  table and get them off to a perfect start in the All-Ireland Championship. The sun shone brightly on a  glorious day in Conneff Park Clane and the performance from the Lilywhites matched the wonderful weather.

Kildare opened the scoring in the second minute when wing forward, Rebecca McDermott, converted  the free she had won and then Ardclough’s Ava Kelly doubled Kildare’s lead a minute later. Roscommon  got off the mark in the fifth minute when full forward, Tara O’Brien, pointed from a tight angle.  Rebecca McDermott scored her second placed ball when she pointed a 45’ and full forward Anna  Coburn stretched the lead to three after winning a high ball from midfielder Rebecca Duffy and  rounded the full back to raise another white flag for Kildare.

McDermott struck again, midway through  the half, this time from play with a well taken point from out on the left. Roscommon had a number  of forays into the Kildare half but could not find a way past the Kildare defence and in a three minute  spell from the 20th to the 23rd minute Kildare notched up 1-2 to give them the advantage that their  dominance deserved. Firstly there were well taken points from the Ardclough duo of Coburn and Kelly  and then corner forward Ciara Ryan put some real daylight between the sides when she raised the first  green flag of the game to give Kildare a 1-7 to 0-1 lead.

Roscommon’s corner forward Elizabeth Coyle  saw her effort from a 30metre free come back off the crossbar in the 27th minute and Kildare went up  the other end of the pitch and McDermott converted her fourth point of the half, that effort was  cancelled out by Coyle who got the closing score of the half with a point from a free to make it 1-8 to  0-2 at the break.

The ‘Rossies’ got off to the brighter start in the second half and enjoyed the majority of possession  and had a number of attacks but found no way past the home side’s rearguard with Kildare’s keeper,  Tiarna Kinahan, making two good saves from goal bound efforts from Celine Gacquin and substitute  Ciara Corrigan.

Kildare proved more clinical in front of goal a minute later when Moorefield’s Tara  Christie was first to react after Roscommon net minder Molly Tully saved Coburn’s shot. McDermott  and Coburn raised two more white flags for Kildare in quick succession and Coburn then got in on the  goal scoring act when she found the back of the Roscommon net twice in the 16th and 18th minute to  put the game well out of the reach of Roscommon. McDermott scored her sixth point of the day  between those two goals and substitute Aoife Fenner from St Laurence’s also raised another white flag  for Kildare.

The fifth and final goal of the game came from corner forward Ciara Ryan who raced  through the middle of the Roscommon defence and rifled the sliothar to the back of the net.  Roscommon responded with four pointed frees during the course of the half from full forward Tara  O’Brien. When the final whistle sounded Kildare had ran out twenty one point winners, 5-12 to 0-6.

The Lilywhites were very efficient in front of goals but the Kildare defence deserve high praise, they  limited Roscommon to only one point from play. The competition takes a break for the month of June  due to the Junior Cert and Kildare face Kerry at home on its resumption on 2nd July.
