KILDARE: Court sitting is abandoned in Naas today

The regular sitting of Naas District Court was abandoned today - before it even started.

A number of people who turned up assuming that their cases would go ahead were politely turned away and told to return in September.

A notice placed in the window of the historic building on main street informed the public of the cancellation.

The court was adjourned until Wednesday September 20, with the exception of  some cases such as those appearing by video link and people who are in custody and were due to appear in person.

Both cohorts had their hearings transferred to Cloverhill District Court today.

The Naas court is very busy with many cases coming before it as the population continues to expand.

This has prompted repeated calls by sitting judge Desmond Zaidan for a second judge to be appointed to the area permanently, something that is entirely justified when the local case list is compared to many other areas around the country.

There were over 200 issues due to be heard today and the cancellation will add to an already bloated list of adjourned matters.

The Courts Service said that no judge was available.
