As the Christmas season draws to its close, householders are being urged to dispose of their Christmas Tree safely with Kildare Fire Service issuing a warning against burning trees.

Taking to social media, Kildare Fire Service has explained the dangers of burning a Christmas Tree in the fireplace.

Do not attempt to burn your trees in the fireplace. Why?

? The needles from the trees can spark and jump onto furniture nearby, or out onto your roof or nearby areas... ? They have a high sap content which can burn quickly and explosively ? These trees burn quickly and very hard to control ? They produce creosote which could line your flue/ chimney wall, and could cause re-ignition at a later stage, thus leading to a more serious incident ? Because of the rapid burning, smoke could fill your homes and cause extensive smoke damage

With these points in mind, Kildare County Council have set up free recycling points around the county to dispose of trees correctly, available from Saturday 5 January to 19th Jan. Please utilise where possible:

· Athy, Meeting Lane · Clane, GAA Club · Maynooth, Council Depot, Leinster Street · Naas, Fairgreen · Newbridge, Council Nursery, Naas Road · Monasterevin Soccer Club, Barrett Park, Canal Road (open to the public on Sat, 5and Sat, 12 Jan only)
