Residents of the oldest local authority estate in Naas are likely to have to pay to find a solution to sewage problems.

Cllr Anne Breen asked that Kildare County Council investigate the occurrence of sewerage blockages occurring in the back gardens of some residences at St Corban’s Place.

She said the estate was built in 1938 and the sewers are located in the back gardens.

She said the possibility of a blockage should be assessed.

However, a Naas Municipal District meeting was told that over 90% of the properties in this estate are privately owned.

The meeting also heard that from 2015 to date, KCC only received four sewerage-related requests for repairs to council-owned properties there and all were responded to.

The “quantity and regularity” of these issues is not a cause of concern for the council and “would be reasonably typical of development of this type.”

It was pointed out that Uisce Éireann (Irish Water) is responsible for resolving any issues which may arise in the sewers of private properties and issues relating to blockages of sewers should be reported to UE for further investigation.

KCC official Eoghan Ryan said the neighbours need to come together to find a solution.

Cllr Fintan Brett said that it could be that a connection was made and not done correctly - but a camera survey could identify the problem.

KCC’s Veronica Cooke said that there are only five council-owned properties in St Corban’s Place and there is no problem with the connections and all maintenance problems have been resolved.

She said the responsibility for other properties rests with the owners.

Ms Cooke added that the council homes were not causing the problem.
