A controlled pedestrian crossing has been requested for Dublin Road in Naas.

Cllr Colm Kenny said the crossing is needed in the vicinity of the Roseville and Maudlins Cemetery bus stops.

He told a Naas Municipal District meeting that the road is very wide and residents are looking for a safe crossing point.

Kildare County Council engineer Donal Hodgins said a service provider has been engaged to  prepare detailed design and contract documentation for the Dublin Road active travel scheme, which will encourage walking, cycling and bus use.

He added that the layout of the existing bus stops at the Roseville Estate, the entrance to the residential street and a suitable location for a signalised pedestrian crossing are being examined.

He said that the designs, when completed by the end of June, will be submitted to the National Transport Authority for approval and a request for construction funding will be made.

The scheme envisages a transformation of the route between Poplar Square and Maudlins roundabout (near the “big ball”).

The aim is to promote cycling and walking, rather than car use.

At Fishery Lane the roundabout lanes will be reduced in width to slow motorists and a touc an crossing, which facilitates cyclists as well as walkers, will be provided at the Odeon cinema.
