Negative view of teens means there's a shortage of facilities for them in Kildare

The negative view some people have of teenagers is hampering the provision of safe and accessible facilities.
This, according to Kildare County Council official Celina Barrett, nerds to be considered against the background of calls for better facilities.
Social Democrats councillors Pat Balfe and Chris Pender have asked KCC to deliver a multi use games area, including skateparks, to communities across the county.
According to the councillors these are “critical social infrastructure for young people, supporting their physical health, mental well- being, and social engagement.”
Ms Barrett noted that a pilot project is currently underway in Celbridge and has involved a lot of engagement with teenagers to find out the facilities they want.
In a report for a KCC meeting she said: “The outcome was that teenagers wanted a variety of small facilities rather than one large one and within walking or cycling distance. The most popular facilities were hangout spaces with covered seating and access to Wifi and USB charging points.”
The meeting also heard that other facilities were sought including an outdoor gym.
She pointed out that other separate recreational projects have also been identified within the county and need to be considered as well as potential locations.
The meeting also heard that money and human resources will be needed.
