Cllr Peggy O'Dwyer called on Kildare Co Council (KCC) to take the property under its control.

She said: "I have requested an environment assessment of this area due to the disposal of green waste materials and tyres."

She alleged that the control of dogs was also a concern at the site.

She further claimed that a farmer was unable to access his fields due to the encampment.

She added: "I gave requested through Kildare County Council that the owners act in whatever way possible to stop this from occurring immediately.

"The Taking in Charge process is ongoing through KCC."

Under the Waste Management Act, those found to be responsible for, or involved in, the unauthorised disposal of waste are liable to a maximum fine of €5,000 on summary conviction and/or imprisonment for up to 12 months in a District Court.

In a Circuit Court, the penalties increase to a maximum fine of €15 million on conviction and/or imprisonment for up to 10 years.
