Dublin Fire Brigade said firefighters rushed to the scene and the key infrastructure had to be closed for a number of hours after a car burst into flames.

There were knock-on traffic delays as a result and motorists were advised to avoid the area.

Public transport services were disrupted such as Translink and Goldline coaches.

Earlier, one Tunnel user reported a lot of smoke before the emergency services arrived.

The motorist said: "Car broken down in left lane of Dublin Port Tunnel heading Southbound. Possible fire as lot of smoke getting thicker. Advise to avoid or use recirculating air if already in tunnel."
