Usually filmed in Luggala and Ashford in Co Wicklow, Vikings is inspired by tales of the raiding Norsemen of early medieval Scandinavia.

In Irish history, the Viking first raided the country in their longboats in the 8th Century, killing locals and pillaging monasteries.

Settlements were later established in Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Cork and Limerick.

The series, which receives funding from the Irish Film Board, has about 400 Irish involved in the ambitious production including actor Gabriel Byrne who starred in the first season.

A massive set of early medieval Paris had to be built in Co Wicklow for Season Three as the warriors are shown mercilessly invading the city in the drama.
